DIY Caribou Hunting on Alaska's Dalton Highway
Join army first lieutenant Mason Coons and Allen Montgomery as they hunt caribou along the haul road north of Alaska's Brooks Mountain range. The Dalton Highway, also known as the Haul Road, is a 414-mile road in Alaska that runs from Livengood to Deadhorse on the Arctic Ocean. It's one of the world's northernmost roads and the only road in Alaska that crosses the Arctic Circle. The highway was built in the 1970s to support the Trans-Alaska Pipeline and service the oil fields on Alaska's North Slope. Those brave enough to navigate the haul road are rewarded the opportunity to hunt caribou without the need of a guide or charter flight.

And for the record, we did blow through one years ago lol a bunch of guys together just hanging out, shooting and barbequing on the weekends. Rhinehart did send a new one after we destroyed it. But it definitely took a long while for us to destroy the target.

    I haven't shot a 6.8 but I have an aggressively braked 300 win mag that my wife loves shooting. If the math from brake tests is accurate it should have roughly 14-15 pounds of recoil. If I could cut a 6.8 Western recoil that much I don't think my wife would ever hand the rifle back over.

    • @Recruitcreative
      @Recruitcreative 6 дней назад

      @RJBiteanerd recoil was huge factor for me personally. Not so much for hunting but for practicing on the range. The reduced recoil of the 6.8 (even in a much lighter rifle) allows me to shoot it more comfortably, which in turns means I'll practice more. I know some guys will say to roughen up but I like being comfortable when practicing so I'm comfortable when hunting. The 6.8 sends more than enough energy down range for hunting elk/deer.

People complain about brakes, suppressors, and everything other little thing to be more "manly" while hurting themselves. A custom 6.8 build is on my list once I start reloading and I expect it'll be my firearm of choice once everything is said and done. Since I don't reload I'm still working with the win mag for quality ammo availability where I live. If 6.8 took off like I'd hoped I would have bought it instead of the win mag as on paper it's about the absolute perfect round.

    You bring up an interesting point. It's one more technological advantage put onto a growing pile of them. It's similar to bow sights that range and tell you where to aim. It's basically a crutch for a poor hunter. Ideally, everyone should have to learn the hard way.....by becoming a good hunter and not relying on their technological do-dads. It's called fair chase.

    You are free to feel however you like about location marking technology and I understand the concern you've expressed about the unfair advantage it might provide in stalking and chase. But unless you're into purely primitive hunting, the sport is overwhelmed by technological advantages. compound bows, carbon fiber arrows, optical sites, advanced camouflage, VHF radios, Gore-Tex fabric, tree stands, range finding (in general), firearms, gps, night vision optics, drones, etc... All of these are used in hunting and provide significant tactical advantages over natural prey. Seems pretty weird to worry about this one thing but none of the others. Pin dropping technology provides significant positive aspects to hunting. It increases hunter safety by helping users navigate unfamiliar terrain and find their way back to base or to safety points. It also provides significant ethical improvements in wounded animal location, an ethical concern we should all share.

    • @Recruitcreative
      @Recruitcreative 29 дней назад

      All valid points! I felt a bit hypocritical in only bringing up the rangefinder and cell cams. At the end up the day it’s up to the hunter to decide what they are comfortable with or not so banning these probably isn’t the right move. I think as hunters it’s our responsibility though to ask these questions when products like these are released. I want the next generation of hunters to at least consider fair chase and ethics before making a decision. That’s where I’m coming from. Thanks again for the well educated comment though. We appreciate the feedback!

      Learn how to hunt instead of relying on tech to hold your hand in the woods. Many of the things you mentioned are illegal for hunting in Colorado. Radios, drones, etc all illegal for use in hunting. It's not fair chase and to many real conservationists, it's borderline unethical. If you need tech to keep you "safe", maybe hunting isn't for you.

    Ive been doing this with my phone and other apps for a couple years. I dont need a rangefinder to do this.

      You have an app that you can take a picture of something and it drops a pin? Or you are saying you’ve been manually reading the map and adding a waypoint on your own?

      No, you're dropping a pin looking at a map and then walking to it. He tried that in this video and missed by 800 yards. Terrain navigation in big mountain country is a whole different level.

    I agree with you. This takes away the "hunt" i don't like it. I just gave away my compound bow and have started using a recurve. But i don't think it should be banned.

      How are you liking the recurve?

      @@Recruitcreative love it . Haven't harvested any big game yet but got a couple rabbits lol ... but fun to shoot and it's not all about the kill to me.
